Rolls Royce CEO Calls for Electric Phantom

After recently taking a new electric powered Mini for a
drive, new CEO Tom Purves decided that the company that some may consider the
grandfather of super high end luxury cars should offer a green solution.  While someone who can afford the nearly half
million dollar model likely doesn’t worry about dealing with the prices at the
pump, concerns about the availability of gasoline, along with government
restrictions of vehicle usage in major cities has Purves concerned.  He feels the considering the amount of
Phantom owners who live in major cities around the world, that it would be
important to offer a completely electric powered package.

The company doesn’t need to look very far for a powertrain,
as parent company BMW has already made efforts on electric concepts, so the
work could be done internally.  The 453
horsepower offered by the standard engine would make it one of the most
powerful electric models offered in the world, although concepts have shown
that big power numbers are possible with the current technology, for a
price.  Purves has also mentioned that to
fit the Phantom name, he envisions the electric motor being completely silent.

While the E-Phantom is likely a few years away at best, the
recognition of one of the highest end luxury brands of the importance of
electric models shows that the new trend is growing, thus encouraging more
companies to throw their hats into the ring.
