By: Nolan Browning

So the biggest hurdle currently facing electric vehicles with a limited range like the Nissan Leaf and Chevy Spark EV is that the owners will occasionally want to have a vehicle that can go on those out of town trips to Vegas or take a holiday visit to the in-laws without waiting 8 hours to charge the car after 80 or so miles. Cars like the Chevrolet Volt get around this dilemma by offering an alternative gas engine to extend the range.

But Fiat has a new unique solution to this common EV problem by offering a special rental program courtesy of Enerprise for purchasers of the new 2014 Fiat 500e, with an estimated 86 mile eletric range, that will be released in limited markets around California this summer. According to AutoNews:

Each 500e purchase will include a business account with Enterprise Holdings and enough points to rent a gasoline-powered standard car for up to 12 days a year. Fiat will deposit additional points on the first two anniversaries of the vehicle's purchase to extend the program through the first three years of ownership.

By using Enterprise Holdings' customer reward program, customers will have the option to use their points from Fiat to rent various vehicles, such as minivans or pickups. They also will have access to the company's 6,000 locations.

The pricing information for the Fiat 500e will be released on April 13th, 2013 but we expect the price to be in the $34k range before tax rebates

More information and images at TheIgnitionBlog.com

The new Fusion comes at the peak of the popularity of the hybrid or alternative energy vehicles as the ever-increasing battle to beat $4/gallon gas prices wages on. The trend in the past was to make the hybrid variation of a normal car stand out frm the crowd with large green hybrid badges or sometimes even large "HYBRID" lettering; the new Fusion doesn't resort to these obnoxious games. production of the V60 Plug-in Hybrid will increase to between 4000 and
6000 cars as of model year 2014.

About 30 percent of total volume will go to Sweden and the other
Nordic countries. Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, France, the Netherlands
and Britain will have a share of between 5 and 15 percent each.

Volvo Car Corporation expects that 80 percent of total sales will be company cars.

The Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid is the result of close cooperation
between Volvo Car Corporation and Swedish electricity supplier
Vattenfall. The two companies financed the development project jointly.

The V60 Plug-in Hybrid is only available in Electric Silver livery.
The interior has black leather upholstery with contrasting stitching and
inlays of blue-grey wood.

The front wheels are powered by the five-cylinder 2.4-litre
turbodiesel with 215 hp and maximum torque of 440 Nm. The car has a
six-speed automatic transmission.

The rear axle is powered by an electric motor producing 70
horsepower. The electric motor is supplied with power from a 11,2 kWh
lithium-ion battery pack installed under the load compartment floor.

The driver selects the required driving mode via three buttons that
give the car three entirely different temperaments: Pure, Hybrid or
Power.

In Pure mode the car is powered solely by its electric motor with a range up to 50 kilometres.

In Hybrid the diesel engine and electric motor cooperate to keep CO2
emissions (NEDC, mixed driving cycle for certification) down to 49 g/km
(1.9 l/100 km). The car has a total range of up to 1000 km.

In Power mode the technology is optimised to give the car a diesel
and electric power output of 215+70 horsepower. Maximum torque is
440+200 Nm. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes 6.2 seconds.

The V60 Plug-in Hybrid is recharged from a regular power outlet
(230V). A full charge with 10A takes 4.5 hours. This is cut to 3.5 hours
with 16A, while a 6A charge takes 7.5 hours.

Ford’s first all-electric mass-produced car, the 2012 Ford Focus, isn’t yet available to buy in the U.S., but Ford thinks the delay in bringing it to market will be well worth the wait. With what Ford claims will be a best-in-class fuel efficiency of 100 MPGe, and plenty of patented technology designed to help drivers get the best possible range out of its 23 kilowatt-hour battery pack, Ford is confident its 2012 Focus Electric will be a success. The details were released today at a media event in Dearborn, Michigan, held before next month’s Detroit Auto Show, alongside more information about Ford’s upcoming 2013 C-Max Hybrid and C-Max Energi plug-in hybrid. 100 MPGe? While Ford hasn’t said if the 2012 Ford Focus Electric has undergone official EPA tests for range and fuel economy, director of Ford Electrification Programs and Engineering Sherif Markaby is confident the five-seat hatchback will offer the best fuel economy of its class. “The Focus Electric will break the 100 MPGe mark -- a great symbol of how Ford has transformed its fleet with many vehicles delivery leading fuel economy and efficiency,” he said in an official press release. That said, the $39,995 2012 Focus Electric will be Ford’s most fuel efficient car on the market. Ford is keen to call it the flagship car of its new lineup for 2012 -- one-third of which will achieve a fuel economy greater than 40 mpg. Faster ChargingFord is also keen to point out that the 2012 Focus Electric will be able to charge to full from empty in under four hours using a compatible level 2, 32-amp charging station, thanks to a 240-volt, 32-amp on-board charger. Twice the capacity of the on-board chargers found in cars like the 2012 Nissan Leaf and 2012 Mitsubishi i, Ford claims that its more powerful level 2 charging system will enable customers to travel much further in a day than they could in rival cars. But while the 2012 Ford Focus Electric features faster on-board charging, it doesn’t support the ultra-fast direct-current rapid charging option found on the 2012 Nissan Leaf and 2012 Mitsubishi i. Admittedly however, finding a level 2, 32-amp charging station in most areas is a lot easier than finding an expensive direct current charging station, making the Ford system more versatile for now. Ford also claims charging will be cheaper in the Focus Electric, thanks to smart technology which can be set to charge the car when electricity is at its cheapest or greenest. normally late at night.Tech To Tame Range AnxietyPerhaps more interesting than the larger capacity on-board charger is the specially-designed version of Ford’s popular SYNC technology included with the 2012 Ford Focus Electric. Designed to help coach drivers to be more fuel efficient, the Focus Electric features a display which expresses the amount of ‘spare’ energy the car estimates you will have after you reach your destination. And while it displays that information in a kooky way -- with digital butterflies -- we like the glass-half-full optimism that Ford applies to remaining battery charge. In addition, Ford says the SYNC-derived mapping system, which uses MapQuest data to plan routes, will be able to plan routes especially designed to help drivers achieve the maximum possible range from a single charge. Just like its rivals, the 2012 Ford Focus Electric will also offer interconnected smartphone apps to control heating, charging and route planning, as well as automatically update information on and locate suitable charging stations. The Usual Eco-MessagesLike all of Ford’s competitors, Ford is keen to point out every little eco-minded detail of the Ford Focus Electric, from its recycled plastic-bottle seats through to the eco-credentials of the factory where the car will be made. Ordering has already opened for the 2012 Ford Focus Electric in two states, but with limited production for 2012, the long wait for an electric Ford continues.+++++++++++Follow GreenCarReports on Facebook and Twitter. This story originally appeared at Green Car Repor

highly-anticipated 2012 Green Car of the Year® winner at a press
conference Thursday morning during the Los Angeles Auto Show's press
days. The cleanest running internal combustion vehicle certified by the
EPA, the all-new 2012 Civic Natural Gas is the fifth generation of this
alternative fuel vehicle and the only assembly-line produced natural gas
passenger model manufactured for sale in the United States. It runs on a
clean fuel that is almost exclusively domestically sourced and
typically priced about 30 percent less than gasoline.

"There is no other vehicle like the Civic Natural Gas on American highways, and this recognition has been a long time coming for Honda," said Ron Cogan, editor and publisher of Green Car Journal and editor of GreenCar.com. "The new-generation Civic Natural Gas features greater fuel efficiency, a handsome and roomier new design, and tailpipe emissions levels untouchable by any other internal combustion production vehicle. After manufacturing this environmentally conscious model for fleets since its introduction in 1998, Honda has now made a major commitment to bring its exceptional, American-built natural gas sedan to everyday buyers, offering an all-new array of popular consumer-oriented features and availability through 200 Honda dealers in 36 states."

Natural gas is a clean-burning, versatile fuel found in abundance in the United States, making the Civic Natural Gas a practical solution for consumers across America, and a well deserving vehicle for the 2012 Green Car of the Year award. Boasting 38 highway MPGe, the Honda Civic Natural Gas is an Advanced Technology Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle and also features Eco Assist and a selectable ECON feature to further enhance the vehicle's environmental efficiency. Along with fast-fills in about five minutes at stations offering natural gas, the Civic Natural Gas can be time-filled at home overnight with an available wall-mount refueling appliance from BRC Fuel Maker. The $26,155 Civic Natural Gas can drive approximately 240 miles on a tankful of compressed natural gas, almost two-and-a-half times the range of a typical all-electric vehicle.

"The Civic Natural Gas is not only a great vehicle, it also demonstrates Honda's commitment to provide a variety of alternatives to gasoline," said Michael Accavitti, vice president of marketing at American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "The Civic Natural Gas and the all-new Fit EV that we introduced yesterday at the Los Angeles Auto Show are the latest additions to a rapidly expanding family of alternative energy Honda vehicles aimed at cutting petroleum use and reducing our carbon footprint."

The Green Car of the Year jury, comprised of six environmental and automotive experts along with Green Car Journal editors, selected the 2012 Honda Civic Natural Gas from a field of five finalists that also included the Ford Focus Electric, Mitsubishi i, Toyota Prius v and Volkswagen Passat TDI. Green Car of the Year honors are reserved for exemplary vehicles that forward environmental performance in meaningful and quantifiable ways, with all nominees on sale by Jan. 1 of the award year.

This year's jurors include the following leaders of the nation's top environmental organizations: Carl Pope, chairman of the Sierra Club; Frances Beinecke, president of the Natural Resources Defense Council; Jean-Michel Cousteau, president of Ocean Futures Society, and Matt Petersen, president of Global Green USA. Also, Jay Leno, noted auto enthusiast and host of the "Tonight Show," as well as automotive icon Carroll Shelby join Green Car Journal editors in rounding out the 2012 jury. Green Car Journal has been unveiling the Green Car of the Year winner at the LA Auto Show every year since it initiated the annual award in 2005.

"This year's Green Car of the Year finalists underscore that there is no single solution to our transportation challenges," said Cogan. "Virtually every automotive manufacturer is exploring green technology in several forms. The Honda Civic Natural Gas, is a prime example of an alternative fuel that is viable, efficient and practical, making it worthy of the 2012 Green Car of the Year award."

SOURCE Los Angeles Auto Show

Used by automakers, car dealers and consumers alike, it has become the ultimate go-to guide for realistic valuations on virtually any age or condition of car.

But although the Kelley Blue Book is now providing valuations for all of the electric cars on the market today, it remains skeptical about just how much electric cars will be worth in a few year's time. Are the Kelley Blue Book estimates correct? Or are they ultimately hurting electric car sales and consumers?

2012 Chevrolet Volt considered best resale value electric car

Last week, the Kelley Blue Book crowned the 2012 Chevrolet Volt the Best Resale Value
award in the electric car category, claiming that the Volt will
depreciate the least of all electric cars on the market today and retain
around 42 percent of its value in three years' time.

Put that into cold, hard cash, and according to the Kelley Blue Book an average base-level 2012 Chevrolet Volt will be worth just $16,797 in three year's time. It's similar to the valuation given last year to the 2011 Chevrolet Volt.

Gas guzzlers worth more, but cost more to run

Interestingly
however, look at the Kelley Blue Book top ten best resale cars for 2012
and you notice one thing: The cars Kelley Blue Book expects to retain
the most value are SUVs or Crossover SUVs.

The
winner -- the 2012 Jeep Wrangler -- is predicted to retain 68 percent
of its sticker price in three years' time, but with the worst fuel
economy of its class, it is guaranteed to cost a lot to run.

An unknown field gives 'worst case' valuations

While
the Kelley Blue Book has over 80 years of valuation experience to pool
when it comes to gasoline cars, trucks and motorcycles, it hasn't got
very much experience evaluating electric cars.

And with no
hard-and-fast evidence to pool on battery life for lithium-ion derived
battery packs, Kelley Blue Book Valuators are erring on the side of
caution when it comes to predicting residual value.

That equates
to an expectation that battery packs will not retain their initial
capacity beyond the manufacturer's warranty period, even if automakers
and electric car advocates disagree.

Lousy predicted values mean higher initial costs

Ultimately,
the Kelley Blue Book valuations -- and similar valuations from other
firms -- are driving up the cost of owning an electric car in order to
protect the investment of firms leasing and producting electric cars.

For
example, if you lease your car, the amount you pay on your monthly
lease is directly influenced to the car's predicted value at the end of
the lease agreement.

Since the finance or lease company needs to
know it will make a profit on every agreement, it needs to make sure
that it can recover any expected depreciation during the lease
agreement. In essence, the person leasing the car reduces the finance
company's investment risk.

In other words, the higher the expected depreciation, the more you'll pay per month.

Why we disagree

So
far, demand for electric cars is still high, due to early-adopting
demand, but we think that demand will continue as electric cars become
more mainstream and more and more consumers feel the pinch of the
gas-pump.

One year after launch, cars like the 2011 Nissan Leaf
and 2011 Chevrolet Volt are still performing as expected, with many
early-adopting owners reporting no perceptible drop in battery capacity
after months and many thousands of miles of use.

What's more,
many owners of previous-generation electric cars -- like the 1998-2002
Toyota RAV4 EV, are still happily driving their cars with over 100,000
miles on the battery pack without major pack capacity loss.

With
states like California offering High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane access
to electric cars regardless of the number of occupants, expect
white-HOV-lane sticker plug-in cars to become as sought after as the hybrids which preceded them.

+++++++++++
This story originally appeared at Green Car Reports

The three Urban Vehicles of the Year award winners and finalists were announced after being selected by an independent panel of automotive journalists, who reviewed several dozen cars and trucks in various North American urban settings. Decisive magazine's Urban Vehicles of the Year, which were selected on the basis of style, practicality and attainability, will be featured in the magazine's winter issue and on mobile applications.
"We are pleased with the recognition of the 2012 Toyota Prius Plug-in as
a well-designed, smart and attainable vehicle, especially in an urban
environment," said Jim Colon, vice president of Toyota product
communications at Toyota Motor Sales, USA, Inc. "We're confident that
the Prius Plug-in's extended electric range, selectable EV mode,
expected 87 MPGe and quick home charging are among the features that
helped Toyota secure this distinction."

Toyota Prius Plug-in will be among the winners and finalists to be
honored at the 16th Annual Urban Wheel Awards, hosted by the Emerging
Diversity Education Fun (EDEF) and Decisive Media, on Sunday, January 8,
2012, in Detroit.

"This is the Prius everyone has been waiting for," said Lyndon Conrad
Bell, editor-in-chief of Decisive magazine. "Endowing the world's
favorite hybrid with the ability to run purely on electric power for
significant distances and recharge itself from an AC outlet remade and
exceptional urban green car into the ideal urban green car."

Joining the popular third-generation Prius Liftback and the new Prius v,
the new Prius Plug-in combines the benefits of the standard Prius
model's hybrid vehicle operation with extended electric vehicle (EV)
driving and more affordable pricing than pure electric or range-extender
type vehicles. The 2012 Prius Plug-in Hybrid, which offers seating for
five, is expected to achieve a manufacturer-estimated 87 MPGe (miles per
gallon equivalent) in combined driving and 49 MPG in hybrid mode.

Toyota has sold more than one million Prius models in the United States
since the first-generation model was introduced for model-year 2001. The
recent introduction of the larger Prius v and now the Prius Plug-in
Hybrid brings this eco-focused model range to four distinct vehicles,
including the Prius c, which will debut in 2012.

Content courtesy of Toyota
mostly positive experience. The big performance drawbacks: with a
4,001-lb. curb weight, the EV takes 9 seconds to accelerate from 0-60
and has a 90-mph top speed. The plus side is a car with perfect 50/50
weight distribution, well-calibrated electric steering and neutral

Lavrinc traveled 25 hard-charging "journalist" miles and found the car's
battery to be about 33% depleted. During more-tame driving the stated

It is an electric conversion of the upcoming 2013 Chevrolet Spark minicar (known in some markets as the Beat).Second, the battery Spark will be largely focused on California, and perhaps other states that have adopted its emission standards. The Chevrolet Spark EV won't be offered nationwide--unlike the 2012 Chevy Volt extended-range electric car, which GM says will be available in all 50 states by the end of this year. .Third, volume will be low, perhaps 2,000 cars a year. This may be just enough for GM to comply with California's unique Zero-Emissions Vehicle mandate. That number may, in fact, be roughly similar to the planned volumes for the 2012 Toyota RAV4 EV, another battery electric conversion of a gasoline car to be sold in California by another large global automaker. The gasoline version of the Chevrolet Spark, incidentally, will arrive in the first half of next year as a 2013 model. But its front-end design will differ somewhat from the Spark now on sale in Asia and Europe (shown in the photos accompanying this article). We'll have more details of GM's new all-electric car once the press event kicks off.Meanwhile, consider this: Just five years ago, GM was pilloried by the film Who Killed the Electric Car? which documented its 2002 decision to take back and destroy all of the pioneering EV1 electric cars it had begun to lease in the late Nineties. From that public ignominy, it now appears that General Motors will soon be the sole global automaker to build and sell gasoline, diesel, mild-hybrid, full-hybrid, range-extended electric, and battery electric vehicles. What a difference a decade makes.+++++++++++Follow GreenCarReports on Facebook and Twitter. This story originally appeared at Green Car Repor

However, if you tell him about recent forecasts in the hybrid commercial truck segment, that same trucker might just think you're trying to pull his leg.

Annual global sales of commercial electric-drive trucks are expected to
jump more than tenfold within the next six years, as more companies
invest in advanced powertrains. The reason for such high numbers? Why
the high (and rising) cost of diesel of course.

Almost 101,000 medium- and heavy-duty hybrid trucks will be sold
worldwide in 2017, up from less than 10,000 this year, according to Pike
Research. North America will account for roughly a quarter of these
predicted sales while Asia Pacific will make up more than 40 percent.

More businesses are investing in hybrid technology for their trucks as
the global economy has proven slow to recover and oil prices continue to
rise. Industry analysts have predicted rapid growth for electric-drive
trucks because of the potentially substantial fuel-cost savings compared
to conventional diesel trucks of comparable size.

Further adding fuel to the hoopla is the fact that analysts suspect the
federal government will likely continue to give tax breaks to companies
that buy electric-drive trucks in order to encourage US businesses to
cut down on greenhouse-gas emissions, while simultaneously reducing
dependency on foreign oil.

Since 2000, UPS has added more than 370 hybrid vehicles to its fleet,
including 129 this year alone and FedEx isn't too far behind with
roughly 330 hybrids in its fleet.

Interestingly, these latest forecasts are actually slightly downsized
compared to an earlier prediction that annual hybrid truck sales would
eclipse the 100,000 mark by 2015. The reason for this is that the first
prediction included busses in addition to hybrid commercial vehicles.

3 Best-Selling Hybrids: Toyota Prius, Honda Insight, Sonata Hybrid

For a few years now, hybrid sales have been stalled at 2 to 3 percent of the U.S. market. But for the first seven months of this year, the total is at the low end of the scale: Hybrids represented 2.06 percent of sales from January through August, and just 1.98 percent of sals in August alone. The top three best-selling hybrids since January are:Toyota Prius: The quintessential hybrid, the mid-size five-door hatchback Prius has been the best-selling hybrid in the States for many years.2011 EPA ratings: 51 mpg city, 48 mpg highway, 50 mpg combinedHonda Insight: The subcompact five-door hatchback Insight is the cheapest hybrid on sale in the U.S., but its sales have never come close to Honda's original plans. (Changes are coming for 2012.)2011 EPA ratings: 40 mpg city, 43 mpg highway, 41 mpg combinedHyundai Sonata Hybrid: Like the rest of the Hyundai lineup, the new mid-size 2011 Sonata Hybrid sedan sells well and is perceived as good value for money.2011 EPA ratings: 35 mpg city, 40 mpg highway, 37 mpg combinedAnalysts propose several reasons for the plateau in hybrid sales.First, most hybrids from Asian makers--including the three above--are built in their home countries, even if non-hybrid versions of the same car (e.g. Hyundai Sonata) are built in the U.S.That means the March 11 earthquake and resulting tsunami, which severely damaged large portions of Japan's industrial infrastructure, cut off or limited the supply of hybrid models for some time. Some makers--Honda in particular--are still suffering from production cutbacks.Hyundai, on the other hand, was unaffected by the earthquake, and its hybrid Sonata is rapidly climbing the sales charts. At current rates, the 2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid will pass the 2011 Honda Insight this month to take second place on the sales charts for 2011.Second, hybrid cars are still more expensive than gasoline cars of the same size. Yes, gasoline costs are lower, but retail buyers chronically underweight running costs and overemphasize purchase price--meaning hybrids carry a disadvantage on first glance.Third, U.S. buyers can now choose from a far broader range of vehicles with a combined EPA rating of 30 mpg or more. While the relative value of improvements to gas mileage are confusing to many, a 33-mpg combined rating in a conventional gasoline car may be perceived as "good enough" for many buyers who aren't inclined to go for the top 50-mpg fuel economy of the Prius. After all, with gas at $3.50 a gallon, the cost difference over 10,000 miles between 33 and 50 mpg is just $350. Even if buyers don't do the math, many likely understand the declining cost savings at the higher end of the mileage scale. But take heart, hybrid fans. Virtually every carmaker is working on expanding its hybrid offerings, simply because global gas-mileage and carbon emissions standards will require that some portion of future lineups include vastly more fuel efficient vehicles. All cars will get more efficient, and gasoline cars may close the gap with today's hybrids (e.g. the SkyActiv engine in the 2012 Mazda Mazda2 subcompact may deliver a combined rating of more than 40 mpg on U.S. test cycles). But there'll be more hybrids available, and their mileage too will increase--even if, like GM with its mild-hybrid Buick eAssist technology, they're not necessarily called "hybrids".This is just the start of a long evolution in car technology.Hmmmmmm.
