Depends on the size of the air mattress. Considering the type of stuff I've already hauled in my FEH, including a full-size unassembled crib whose box fit the entire cargo footprint (with rear seats down) of my FEH, I'd say you could easily fit a small air mattress in there for 2 people to sleep. If you have any height to you, you'd probably want the rear lift gate open, but then I'd do that anyway to have airflow and a sense I was actually camping (I'm a tent camping gal, although not right now at 35 weeks pregnant...)

We saw two HiHy's yesterday (kinda rare to see any non-Prius hybrid in our daily wanderings, so it was notable to see two HiHy's) -- one when we were on the highway, and another on city streets as we were en route home. The HiHy, at least from the outside/vehicle footprint, really isn't that much larger than the FEH. I'm only talking visual perspective -- I'm sure there are real dimension differences inside and out, but visually the two together are surprisingly close in height and width, if not length.
