If your concerned about speed, room, and safety then the Highlander Hybrid is the best choice. If your not then the FEH is ok. I get 28 MPG in my Highlander Hybrid, and the 0-60 on it is 7.4 seconds vs. 10.8 seconds on the Ford Escape Hybrid. The FEH only has a 4 cyl while the Highlander has a 6 cyl. Gas MPG difference in the two are not major.
