What a car can do, and what most people do with a car are two different things. I see hybrids fly past me all the time on I-10 on my commute to and from work. Most are Priuses, and they are driving about 80+ miles per hour. I doubt they are getting the 50+ MPG, but are getting the 40 MPG most people report. It is all in how you drive. The bets technology won't correct all of your bad driving habits, they might help them though.
