I'm with Bob on this one unless time is a significant factor.
I will routinely utilize an outer highway loop to get from one side of my town to the other for that reason alone. It adds about 5 extra miles of driving, but fortunately in our global warming F150, economy works out about the same with the elimination of all of the stop and go traffic (which cuts our economy by more than 1/3).
