I was expecting to take my TCH to 200k miles and 10 years, but the Volt could cut that short.
With 40 miles of plug-in range, your wife wouldn't even need to plug-in at work.
My guess is that GM will use a heat-pump as they did in the EV1. More efficient than a heating element. Although they will probably have to put one in anyway for low low temperatures.
In my TCH I use the seat heater mostly. Last winter I didn't use the heater much at all. The seat heater heats you up faster and is much more efficient. Since I'm already wearing a coat, there is no need to heat the car to 70 degrees.
