Well, the cat went bad on my truck last year and clogged, and at the time I was hard on money, So I just gutted it. I drive the truck less than 5k a year, so i guess I wasn't polluting that much :p it's primarily used for 'play' and not a daily driver:
tows my track car, and occasional
off road fun.
But yeah, I did put on a high flow cat that will be suitable for truck use. And the rest of the truck is in good shape too. I do have a Flowmaster exhaust, but it's not obnoxiously loud, just a nice rumble at idle. And you're right, touching emmissions stuff on an OBD-2 car is not good. Because there was no cat, I ruined the second O2 sensor.
