It may make more sense to visit a well stocked, hobby shop, and buy the model parts needed to make a demonstration CVT. Basicly you'll need two shafts with a spline; four cones; a belt; and a hinged beam and bearings to apply and back-off two of the cones to change the ratio. Springs can also be used on the beam pivot to maintain the belt tension.
The beauty is all of the parts can be mechanically operated giving your fellow students and idea of what forces are involved and the effects.
The Toyota CVT mechanism is quite a bit different and requires a different set of parts. The real challenge is making an open, planetary gear system but you didn't ask about that one.
