We have a Prius FAQ that should help you get better performance in the future. It isn't a "do it this way" as much as "here are some lessons learned." Feel free to use whatever makes sense.
After the first tank, I'd recommend recording you mileage. A lot of what we learned is based upon patterns detected and documented in the mileage database.
