Our safety training at work tells us to never back up, period. Of course sometimes you need to back up but it is best avoided for the safety reasons you mentioned. It is really important to avoid backing if you vehicle has poor rear visibility. They teach us to park in the second of two spots, nose out, if that is at all possible . That way no backing is required at all.
