Update: I drove home yesterday and managed 57.4mpg with an average speed of 50mph in Denver and 60mph on the open interstate. Overall, that is an average of 64mpg including the drive up!!! I knew that the HCH was a great car, but I never had any expecations of mileage like that.

I'm curious what kind of mileage I would have gotten if I had kept it at 50mph the whole way, but if I can manage 64mpg at a ~57mph average, there is no reason compelling enough to try going any slower.

We have a 2,000 mile trip coming up in the end of June where I plan to do a lot of experimenting. When my wife drives, she will use cruise at 70-75mph and I will record the data from my handheld GPS (average speed, elevation change etc.). When I drive, I will do a lot more experimenting with cruise vs. no, 55 vs. 60 vs. 65mph, etc so we should have a lot of different data points by the time we get home. I plan to buy gas every ~100 miles when we switch driving so all mpg will be calculated.

Commuter car, grocery getter, and summer road tripper--average 10k miles per year.

Winter road trips and ski trips, bad weather commuter and my wife's "daily" driver--expected average 4k miles per year.
