It's not really a fair comparison.
1) The Tesla exists. The first three production cars have been made, and there are many more being constructed as we speak.
2) The Volt might never actually exist.
3) There is a $60,000 price difference.
4) There is a practicality issue. I like the Tesla a lot, but it is tiny.
5) Why do you not mention the Fisker Karma? I have a deposit on it-- so I guess I clearly think between the Volt and the Tesla, it wins. It has a 50 mile electric only range, and priced $20k less than a Tesla. It's a little more like a conventional hybrid than the Volt, but the "stealth" mode allows it to operate like an electric car:
