The federal tax on a gallon of gas is 18.4 cents per gallon. Some people think we should do away with that--at least temporarily (McCain, Clinton). It's not like we can suddenly stop building and maintaining roads. Is the gas tax now enough to cover this? If you stopped taxing or lower the tax on gas, that money still has to come from somewhere (other taxes). Why would you want to give people a false sense that gasoline is cheaper than what it really is? So people might still think that commuting in their SUV is way cheaper than what it really is?
