Note: when you browse to the page listing all your PMs - look at the bottom:
Download all Private Messages as :
XML | CSV | Text
....you can save the PMs in HTML, MS Excel, or plain text format.
Also note that most vBulletin users will find a lot of PMs to delete in the "Sent Box"
