I've spoken to a number of dealers about getting a Prius in January 2006 as well.

I think the most important thing to do is to find a nice dealer/salesperson and establish a good rapport so they will work with you. Dealers see what vehicles will be delivered to them a month (sometimes two) in advance. Around here there isn't a waiting list for the Prius anymore, but once the dealer sees what Prius deliveries are coming they will take a deposit and promise it to you if you like. The dealer doesn't have any control over what Prius packages or configurations they will receive. But don't worry, unless you want something wierd/rare it will eventually come through. And you should have several months to still be among the first 60,000.

It is not a scientific process, and the dealer/salesperson is in control. So get friendly and get them to work with you.
