My suggestion is to not worry too much about staying in EV or battery mode when accellerating from a stop. Instead, as soon as you get to the cruising speed, let up on the gas then gradually reapply it to the point where you are maintaining the speed you desire. On a flat road below 40 miles per hour, this *should* be accomplished in EV mode.
