If you are in that situation you do not need to turn off the car to get the hatch released. Just press the unlock button on a front door and the hatch will be set to open.

Or rather I'm pretty sure of this. I suppose I'll have to test it out again. It has been a few months since I've had the need to have the hatch open while I was in the vehicle.
