My theory is somehow the MCM and BCM units failed - ruining the batteries. So far, I have not explaination aside from "natural death" - which I think is just a euphenism for nobody knows.

Can you get any of the failed parts back? If so and you have the schematics, you could open them up and/or 'bench' test them. But speculation based upon "it broke" is not going to be very useful.
