I think there are two parts to this issue :-

1. Foreign Oil vs US Oil
2. Energy sources other than Oil

Part 1 : I tend to agree that America will never wean itself off foreign oil - as long as it is so dependent on oil as a fuel source - since there isn't enough supply of American oil to fill current demand.
"Reducing our dependence on foreign oil" is just a political ploy to get the vote for drilling in ANWR passed and more pristine wild places dug up for nothing.

Part 2 : The search for alternative energy sources should rid us of our need for oil period - whatever the source - whether it's local or foreign should become irrelevant.

Driving HCH since 1/2/06, largely deep city driving. Finally filled up today, 1/19/06 for the first time ! Filled up at 4 bars, 350 miles.
