Is it possible this problem caused the dashboard lights to reset to the very dimest setting? The dashboard has a light night and day and has settings for both. Try turning them up all the way (both with the head lights off and then with them on) and see if that helps. That doesn't explain why it happened but it might help solve one problem so the mechanics can focus on the real problem.
