Same here...I have read that this is the best thing to do. And in Colorado, it is ILLEGAL to have the car running unattended with the keys in it. So unless you have remote starters, you can get ticketed.
Last winter, an undercover cop got her unmarked police car stolen from in front of her home. She got in big trouble for doing this and ended up losing the weapons that were in the trunk, too.
