Nicely written.
I think the backlash has more to do with allowing single occupant vehicles in the HOV lane. I think the fact that those vehicles also happen to be hybrids provides a convenient bulls-eye. I see slow drivers in the HOV lane all the time - none are hybrids (we're not allowed here). Yet you don't see these kinds of articles about them...
