You have obviously not heard of Mercedes' BluTec system. It brings NOx down to gasoline engine levels.
smart may build a fortwo cdi hybrid. There is already a prototype, and the average fuel consumption is under 3 L/100 km, which is 0.5 L/100 km better than the pure cdi diesel.
