Thanks for the tip. I went out and bought those exact suction cups. Now my trunk has a nice solid sound when it closes, but I don't really like the look of those white plastic pins sticking through the plate. And also, the suction cup came lose once

Given no other option, I may just keep it as is.

Also, maybe I will try to trim the pins and cover them with those chrome caps.
Usually I stick those caps over the screws with a dab of silicone.
