While I welcome the legislation here in CA, I think I would be a bit concerned driving my hybrid in the HOV lanes, due to the typical speed of vehicles in those lanes.
My experience in CA is that folks generally tend to travel, at a minimum, at 10mph faster than the posted speed limit in the HOV lanes. I used to be a 5mph-over-the-speed-limit driver, and found that it didn't take long to have a bunch of impatient drivers crammed up my tailpipe.
Now that I am a law-abiding citizen once again, for the most part obeying the speed limits (purely for altruistic reasons, it has nothing to do with getting better MPG, honest ;-) ), I would be concerned that I would be impeding traffic even more than before. I have no problem going the speed limit over somewhere in the right two lanes, but being the lone pokey vehicle in a faster lane would not be a good fit for me.
Since my communte is a paltry 5 miles of city streets, this isn't an issue for me. But it is something I myself would be thinking about as I pondered shifting over to the HOV lanes.
Just my 2 cents. What do the rest of you think?
