I understand the crankshaft position sensor can fill with oil, the oil leak. Unlike air, the oil is incompressible so subsequent thermal expansions can stress and fail the sensor. Without the sensor, the engine doesn't run.

It looks our 01 Echo is affected but our 03 Prius escaped the problem. It was apparently a bad batch of sensors.
