If most of your trips are less than 5 miles then it is severe... my commute is longer than that and so are many people's. Of course it can't hurt, but I think that for many the 10K interval is fine.
The way I see it is, if I am going somewhere less than 5 miles away and not doing shopping, I could ride my bike or walk...
