Yes, hidden regeneration is one of the self-preserving routines used by the BCM's software. There are circumstances when the BCM calls for its use as part of the battery lifetime management. I am not sure if this routine can be cancelled on-the-fly primarily because I have yet to hear of anyone who has succeeded to do it consitently - The routine is cooperative but not re-setable. However, one thing is certain: If you do not manage your SoC carefully (so it remains at 5 bars or higher most of the time) then the probability of a hidden regen will increase.

Some of us are actually working on HCH-II add-ons that help manage the SoC for this and other reasons. So far the results are pretty good and I expect to have my vehicle modded with the ehnancement soon.
