Haha, my apologies. I know I didn't explain that very well... kind of typing away frantically without being clear.

Miles: 100, 200, 150
Gallons: 2, 4, 3
Mileage: 50, 50, 50

Your method: (100+200+150)/(2+4+3) = 450/9 = 50 MPG
You only use miles and gallons.

However, the hybrid displays only tell you the mileage for each tank (usually). At least, that's how most of us report it. So, this is what I do:

[50(100)+50(200)+50(150)]/(100+200+150) = (5,000+10,000+7,500)/450 = 50 MPG
I only use miles and mileage.
