We recently ditched our 1998 Land Cruiser for a 2010 Highlander Hybrid - We live in the mountains and I am regularly going up and down passes. In my land cruiser, I had the option of gearing down...now, I have this B mode on the transmission column. I've used it as I would in my old car, but I hate the sound it makes as it slows the engine down...Although the engine doesn't get hotter, it sure sounds like the engine is revving too high for comfort!! So, I recently discovered, as I descend in B, if I ride the accelerator pedal, it actual decreases the engine noise, yet still slows the car. And the gas engine never engages (Without my foot on the accelerator, the engine tends to slow too much...)

Has anyone else used the accelerator in conjunction with the B mode? I called the dealership and they had no answers for me...I've looked in the manual to no avail...I even sent an inquiry to Toyota.com and they simply said that the B does not over-rev the engine. However, they never addressed my use of the accelerator when in B mode...ANYONE? I would love to know if I'm doing it right as we are in the middle of winter and we've had some lovely icy / snowy roads lately...

Thanks in advance for your help...:)

So a few months ago, my check engine light came on. I took it to a random mechanic, he said he scanned it using two different scanners, both giving him different codes, but the one common code they both gave him was for the catalytic converter.

He reset the check engine indicator, and it came back on again after 30 miles. But since then, it has been off most of the time, but comes back on occasionally. Any experience with this, anyone? Or at least some educated speculation? :D

Styling on the FEH was changed on the 2008, and the 08/09/10 all have similar styling, but what are the minor differences between the 08 and 09? I can tell a 10 right away because they added an explicit hand-hold below the emblem on rear lid and put the latch button in there. Any tips on recognizing the 08 vs 09 vs 10 from the rear/sides/front?

Part1 Some knowledge about MKV video

What's MKV video format?
An MKV file is a Matroska file, the Matroska Multimedia Container is an open standard free Container format. It is similar in conception to other containers like AVI, MP4 or ASF, but is entirely open in specification, with implementations consisting mostly of open source software. Matroska file types are .MKV for video (with subtitles and audio), .MKA for audio-only files and .MKS for subtitles only.

How to play MKV files on Windows?
In principal you can play MKV files on almost every Mediaplayer on Windows if you have the latest CCCP playback pack from Matroska Download Page installed, as most of these players are based on Microsoft DirectShow (TM).

Part 2 MKV Converter - split/join MKV file, convert MKV file, add subtitle

1. Convert MKV file
Format supported
HD(High-definition) video ( AVI, MOV, WMV, MP4 TS, MTS, M2TS, MKV)
SD(Standard-definition) video ( AVI, WMV, MP4, MPEG, VOB, FLV, 3GP, ASF, MOD, MOV, etc.)

Step 1 Click "ADD" to load MKV file.
Step 2 go to "convert to" to set the output format.
Step 3 go to "target path" to set the output location.
Step 4 hit "start" to begin convert MKV to AVI, MP4 3GP, WMV, etc.

2. Split/Join MKV file
MKV file is a high definition file which takes up much space on hard drive. With this MKV splitter, you can trim particular part off the MKV file to save space.

Got to "Edit - trim"
Click the Trim button to open the Trim window and trim the current video file by dragging the Start Time slider to set the start time and dragging the End Time slider to set the finish time.

Or join MKV file
On the main interface, there is an option which shows "merge into one file". Check it if you want to combine your mkv files.

3. Add subtitle to MKV file
If your MKV subtitle is seperated, you may want to add it to the MKV file.

Under "Edit", there is an option for you called "subtitle". There, you can easily add subtitles(.srt, .***, .ssa) to your MKV files.

thanks to those whom have shared. first post from a lurker. i purchased from a ford deal. a 2007 feh - awd w) 70,000 miles recently.

first hybrid. i live in the snow belt region of western ny.

a bit pricey imo at $13,995 but ......thats hybrids.

i forked out the cash for four new general grabber hts tires and the needed allignment.

auto fax back ground check was good & clean. came off a corperate lease.

learned a good deal here about potential soar spots to include electric coolant pumps, blend doors, etc. thumbed through cold weather drive tips, what to expect, look for, listen for etc. thanks :) helped ease the nerves a bunch.

knock on wood mine seems to function well considering it's dead of winter early feb. (cold and snowy) here. pulling averages of 26.5-29 mpg on hilly semi rural setting. expect the mpg to rise with outside air temp. and improved hybrid drive tech.'s by me and my wife :) i have done some of the various tests suggested here, observed, listened close and feel it's function is proper.

watching the bar graph while driveing helped a bunch along with double tap and cold weather techs in general. now attempting to share such with my wife.

had to search a bit to even find a a.w.d. escape hybrid in price range. the travel distance of 80 miles to the small town ford dealer has for the most part been a good experiance. they do have a ford cert. hybrid tech. and told me they had checked out the hybrid system and all was good. from notes i have gathered here and tried it appears so :)

aside from the hybrid function we like the vehicle. we have owned several suv's, 4x4's,jeeps,trucks when gas was less costly. the escape is a bit smaller than some but well thought interior space and fuel effeciancy makes up for it. it drives very well and we both prefer the more boxy truck like appearance as compared to some of the rounded, sloped and slung crossover.......things.... offered today.

again thanks to those tech types whom took the time to share. in times of stress it helped me have some peace.

also found that the local ford dealers garge has hybrid techs.

so far so good

i will let ya know when we break the 150,000 and 200,000 mile markes

I am not an admin here (although I am at other sites), but was asked to be one, to which I politely declined due to time constraints, so I am posting this from the point of view of a fellow member. Unfortunately, this forum doesn't seem to have active admins or mods to police the threads, so we need to do it ourselves...

Many forums are destroyed due to negative or bashing posts. They can be quickly overrun with Windows vs. Mac; Conservative vs. Liberal; Internet Explorer vs. Firefox or even Yankees vs. Red Sox arguments. Trust me, I've seen perfectly nice helpful forums turn into mud slinging dungeons if you ask a question and refer to an attribute that exists on a competing product (for example, try going to a Mac forum and ask how come OS X doesn't have full screen like XP has, or go to a Windows forum and tell them that Macs are better...you'll be amazed at the vitriol that will ensue).

In any event, the TCH forum has, for the most part, been extremely respectful, mature and positive in the postings. However, the recent Toyota accelerator recall and Prius braking issues have caused a fair amount of 'brand vs. brand' posting (with posts such as "... at least my XYZ doesn't kill people..." etc.)
This is a very slippery slope that can easily and quickly destroy the good nature and camaraderie that we've enjoyed here for a few years now. Tempers flare as accusations fly back and forth. This should be a help forum where owners can learn how best to use, maintain and care for their vehicle. It shouldn't be a bash feast where we need to defend one corporation's management, service department, choice of parts suppliers or even the location from where the steel used in manufacturing comes from.

It's easy to start negative postings and once started, difficult to stop, so I'd like to ask all here the following:

If you see a negative or 'bash' post, ignore it without the need to 'strike back' and escalate the issue. Chances are the other poster is 'venting' and we'll all see it as such and not put too much weight behind their comments.

If someone bash posts (for example, pointing out that "... my Bently doesn't have unintended acceleration and puts Toyota's to shame...", just ignore the post, it's amazing how quickly a thread will die down if just let them vent and not feel the need to reply. Of course, we all know that the Bently only gets 10 MPG, so we all know who's got the better car!

If the post is out of line, off topic, disrespectful or in any way offensive, click the alert button and hopefully a mod or admin will attent to the post. However, if you fight fire with fire, the forum will quickly degenerate.

Let's all post about the TCH and not compare it to problems that other brands might have had or are having. Forums are destroyed by these posts

Let's focus on our car and not weaknesses or problems with other cars. As soon as you attack another brand, some owner will see it and start to defend it by attacking ours. We all know the Yugo was a bomb, let's not get the Yugo fanatics up in arms and have them bash our beloved TCHs

Remember, all brands have problems, we're here to help members deal with the issues, not to argue over which is better.

People view their products as extensions of themselves (like their family). If you attack a person's choice of product, they think you are attacking them and will defend themselves accordingly.
Thanks for hearing me out.
I enjoy this place and view it as one of the few forums that haven't been overrun with argumentative postings and I'd like to keep it that way, if we can. I can't count the number of forums i've stopped visiting once they've degenerated in this manner.

Thanks!

My 2008 TCH has about 27000 miles. I stopped my car on a level hard surface, placed the car in park and pressed the button to turn off the motor. The engine died and the car lurched forward noticeably. I could not tell if the wheels moved. If so, probably no more than an inch or so. I think this has happened before, maybe once. I may not have paid attention except for the break and accelerator issues. Is this a problem? What might have happened?
