You can actually switch it off, as well as the beep when your seatbelt isn't buckled. Here you go:

Wow, that's awesome. I wonder how that Goldbergian sequence was discovered. I wonder if there's something similar to disable the HCH's annoying seatbelt/door open beeps?

Thumbs up Re: can i turn down that annoying backup beep?

One thing I have hated about my 2004 Prius was that ****ed back up beep. So, as soon as I found these instructions, I did it! Thanks so much for figuring it out. I am now a very happy Prius driver!! Yippie!

Thumbs up Re: can i turn down that annoying backup beep?

Wow!!! That worked GREAT...all nice and quiet now!

Of course, given how quiet this car is on the outside (the dealer told me stories of how extra careful their employees have to be to not get run over on the lot--and I've certainly had similar experiences), I've always wondered why they didn't have an exterior beep instead of an interior beep?

As we often wonder in the software world, are there other "undocumented features" that we can play with? Easter eggs?

I was skimming through our 2001 Prius service manuals and found a description of a secret menu for diagnostics. It involves pressing two invisible buttons on a certain screen repeatedly. I haven't tried it out yet, but I wonder if there's anything like this for the 2004+ models?

Mnko, you're the only person I know of that would prefer an exterior beep. It's embarrassing enough having a car that pretends to be a truck while reversing.

Here is a transcription of my conversation with my Toyota mechanic at the dealership:

Is there any way to turn off that annoying backup beep?

No, sir. That is a safety feature. The car is so quiet that people need to know when it is in reverse.

But the beeping is inside the car, not outside as a warning to others.

It's for your own protection. The car is so quiet that people need to know when it is in reverse.

Yes, but the car is quiet even in drive. Why not a beeping sound then? How about a long high-pitched whistle?

Well, I would hope you know when it is in drive.

By that logic, I should know when it is in reverse. When the car is going backwards, it is in reverse. When it is going forwards, it is in drive.

is a safety feature, sir.
