Exactly, they already are halfway there. Seems to me it's only common sense to go after the potential Prius buyers by offering up something a bit more similar.

That's the one regret I have for not getting a Prius II. I've always had station wagons as they are practical - better mileage than a SUV but still able to haul outsized objects. To me, a station wagon or 5dr is something all the manufactures should offer up a bit more. To date there are only a few - Focus, Mazda's lineup, Now Toyota has the Scions Xa/Xb and a few more. They are becoming more mainstream --- again.
