Default 71.6 MPG Tank?

I don't believe this.

I just filled up yesterday.
I had gone 649.5 miles and the pump shut off at 8.547 gallons. (76 MPG)

I was sure this was too good to be true and my tank must not be really full the pump must need to be adjusted.
So I started the pump again.
This time it shut off at 9.075 gallons.

649.5 / 9.075 = 71.6 MPG.

This is still too good to be true.
What happened?

Best tank 71.65 MPG.

Before this car I spent two years learning hypermiling on my 2004 HCH1.

Wow! There might be a couple causes, but it could be as simple as you had a good tank. Other things that might cause that would be some kind of unintentional over-fill on your previous tank, or an unexplained under-fill on this one (although you did go to a second click). You may learn more on your next tank - see if the trend continues. Regardless, that's a good run even if it was off by 5-6 MPG. Getting 60's in your 04 is fantastic to begin with. Im jealous.... :-)

Kenny - I am curious where you live? I am from Southeastern PA (Philly / Allentown area) and the weather has taken a cold turn and this really seems to impact my milage. We had a few warmer days a week or so back and the HCH seemed to like this as, without driving any differently or any diffrent route to work, I watched the average MPG slowly climb.

What was your trip mpg reading when you filled up?

I live in Southern California which has been unusually warm and dry lately.
Still, I had my 2004 HCH1 for 22,000 miles and my average was 60.1 MPG.
I am very familiar with what MPG to expect and this is too good to be true.

Plus, the low-gas light had come on a few miles before this fill up so I know that tank had to be more empty and should have taken more gas than 9 gallons.
Does anyone know how much gas is left when that light comes on?

One other alternative may be that you were at a pump with a hyper-sensitive shut-off sensor. If that was the case, you should be able to tell -- painfully -- at your next fill-up.

Or, it could be just great mileage! Hope springs eternal...

Coyote, I think you are right.
I expect the next tank will be very bad.

I'll probably only be able to go 550 miles and to fill up the tank will take 11 gallons, giving me 50 MPG or so.

I'm going to avoid pump #11 at this gas station in the future.

Actually I don't know because I ignore it because my 2006 has that software bug that rezeros its averaging calculation every 62 miles.

If your lifetime mpg was 60.1 on your '04, a tank near 70 would not be abnormal, statistically, methinks.
::shrugs::
It still feels good though, eh?
