It's all about reaction time. At 60MPH you're travelling 88 feet per second. If you're less than 100 feet behind that semi, and it takes you one second to react to what happens, bye bye paint job.

At that kind of distance you have to keep your eyes glued to the semi's back end constantly.
Whenever I'm behind a vehicle that doesn't allow me to see over him or through his windows to what's happening in front of him, I more or less double my distance.
