I'm now positive that the hidden charging is linked to the head lights in my HCH.
Today I drove the first 15-20 miles without head lights on for my daytime commute and I had no hidden charging..as usual. After a few accellerations & hills SOC worked down to about 3-4 bars under half and I switched on the head lights. About 10 seconds later 4 green charging bars appeared and stayed on until the SOC reached about 5 bars above half, then the green bars turned off.
I didn't use IMA Assist at all for the next few miles and the hidden charging brought it all the way up, shy 2-3 bars from 100%.
This is a new, wonderful, useful FE tip.
