Default Eratic MPG on 06 HCH?

I can't find a pattern to MPG. For the most part its arounf 36. Then it just drops to 35. One day it was 40 when it was raining out. This only happened once. I am in Queens NY. I drive mostly on the highway. My milage is around 600. Just got the HCH 06 in January. I only rev it up to around 3000 rpms. I try to let it roll as much as I could but notice my foot cramps up from trying to control the slight touch of the accelorator peddle. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

3000rpms is WAY high. Try to stay below 2500 preveferably between 1800 and 2300 or so. If that isn't quick enough accleration for you then you will have to settle for around 36-39 or so.

All you drive is highway miles, thats all I drive and just got my best today of 56.5 avg mpg's at around 65-70mph.. , although it did take me a while on how to get it just right with the pedal and how to drive my hybrid.., but after 2 tanks already I got the swing of it..you'll get there..give it some time .

Some 2006 Civic Hybrids have a defect in the software that calculates the MPG number displayed.
Every 63 miles, or multiple of 63, it starts averaging from zero miles.

See this thread:

Seems like mine does it every 61 miles. And lasts for about 5 to 10 miles before it goes back to a normal sequence.

That "normal sequence" may be explained by that fact that right after it "zeros" it is averaging toether your mileage over only 0.1 mile, then 0.2 miles, then 0.3 miles so it fluctuates wildly.
After 10 miles it is averaging your MPG over 10 miles so you won't see it fluctuate so wildly.

There's a hell of a lot of traffic around NYC. By chance, are many of your "highway" miles in traffic? That kills mileage. In fact, typical NYC driving kills mileage since many people dart all over the place, doing quick little sprints to change lanes.

Also your car isn't fully broken in at 600 miles. And most importantly, it's very cold there. Wait til spring.
