Steven Turgeon of Atlanta has boosted the mileage on his 2004 Civic hybrid to more than 60 miles per gallon this winter from 55 two years ago by driving less aggressively."Our family also has a 2001 Grand Caravan," Turgeon said. "Using the same lessons learned in our hybrid car, we have raised its (fuel) economy from about 16 mpg to the lower 20s, simply by dumping the aggressive driving habit.

IMHO a realtime MPG gauge should be standard equipment on every car produced.

My wife's BMW has both an instanteous and Trip A / Trip B in it. She is very good at ignoring them.

Right arm! The bar graph typw could really help. Remember the 'economy guage' you could add to your car in the seventies? It simply measured vacuum, but had a red, yellow and green area...the less vacuum, the less economy...

I agree about putting real-time MPG information in all cars. It's amazing how naive some people are about it -- a surprising number of people believe merely being within a city will automatically give them the exact EPA "city" value, and being on an interstate will give them the exact EPA "highway" value. They have no idea that their FE constantly fluctuates depending on what they're doing.

I can't understand why Honda did not put FE information on the regular Civics even though it's on the hybrid. It would have cost literally nothing! The information is already gathered internally (you can use a ScanGauge to display it) and it's just a small change to the software to display it.

Check out Honda's European Civic. Right in the center of the tachometer is an LCD display which has all sorts of FE info. Why that feature isn't available here I'll never know.
