OK now you've REALLY got me curious.....

What kind of "power" do you need to drive yourself three miles? Do you have a steep uphill along the way, or do you have a 50 miles per hour road? Do you have to merge into oncoming traffic at a high speed or something?

I ask because I'm targeting a Segway for myself in a couple of years to cut my vehicle commute almost in half. My kid's school is about 4 miles from my work, and I plan to park the car in the remote lot at the school everyday, then pull the Segway out of the trunk and "Electric Glide" the rest of the way to work. I have sidewalks ALMOST the whole way - will have to ride in the bike lane part of the trip. So I'm naturally curious about personal craft like scooters and Segways......

There are steep hills in town and I weigh about 200 lbs. Also wanted the flexibility to use 40-50 miles per hour roads. Even the 50cc gas scooters didn't make the cut.

Default Small MC's can do very well in short trips.

Small MC's-400-500 cc singles and twins-can do very well in short trips- a little better than the hybrids.I use a 1983 VT500 Honda Ascot (2 cyl 4 stroke-420 lbs wet) for short trips(about 1.5 miles each on average) and get 47 mpg.It is shaft drive,so unfortunately it can't be regeared. If I could gear it up,I could break 50 mpg.
I have a single cyl 500(1978 SR500 Yamaha-375 lbs wet) that can be regeared, and it gets 52-53 mpg.
MC's in the 500 cc range match scooter mpg, but aren't really as user friendly. You can't step thru them, and they are generally taller, higher CG, and more of a handfull for beginning riders. Now they are more stable at speed, and are better on potholed roads.
The downside is safety.Any scooter, or MC is probably 100 times more dangerous per mile than an Insight.Luck.Charlie
