Re: INSURANCE????WOW?
Mine is about the same from our '03 Acura TL Type-S. Hybrid or not, they have no penalty. Time to look for you to look another insurer. Our TL was higher in '03 as new because the rates were based on value and cost of parts at the time. As prices and values came down, so did our insurance. I've only heard of lowered insurance costs (Traveller's) with Hybrids, not an increase. Have them quote a regular Civic and see what the difference is. Also, make sure all the safety endorsements are included.
Smaller cars do often have higher insurance ratings because of crash testing but the Civic does incredibly well in that dept. The Bimmer is one class of car size higher I believe and also may have more safety (Stability control, more airbags?? (doubt it) and better crash rating and parts costs within its class.
We have Geico (love them!) Got lots of discounts due to: 6 Airbags including curtains; high crash safety rating; daytime running lights; passive security system with ignition lockout.
I'd get some new quotes.
We are paying $1,500 per year in New York (Long Island) but that includes $250 collision deductible and 250 comprehensive with full glass. One car (no multi-car discount); clean driving and accident records. We also have $1,500 rental reimbursement (30 days) which I took out.
I've been rear-ended 2 times in last 3 years (non-chargable and non affecting accidents) and had to pay about $100 per rental with taxes and fees and upgrades to a half-decent car. Plus we had a hit and run within the first months with Geico (parked) plus 1 comprehensive claim. Our rates have NEVER increased, only decreased. Geico really do it right.
It's the least we've ever paid for one car, and we had higher deductibles (500/500) in the past.
