How extended? Were you on a slight downhill slope? Perhaps traffic ahead of you was slowing down and you eased your foot off the pedal just a tiny bit?

Most likely what you saw was a glide with the valves shut and no fuel being consumed. The HCH will glide a long way this way because there is very little resistance from the engine compared to other cars where you have to feed fuel to the engine just to keep it from slowing down the car.

Whenever I see that Instant MPG reading at 100 I say - Oh what a feeling!

I was in cruise control and it lasted for at least 30 sec on a level freeway. I have also noted this at slow speeds(~30) for at least a couple of blocks. Perhaps your explanation is rite but I am familiar with "glides". I will try to check it next time I have a clear FW (not too often in CA)
