Default OBD2 scan and computer safe mode

My is computer is throwing the code for EGR valve lift insufficient. I assume I need to remove and clean the EGR valve, as others have also had to do. At the same time However, when I use my scanner to reset the code, the computer seeems to enter some kind of self-diagnostic mode. The IMA system will not work and I can watch the IMA battery charge level gauge tick down one bar at a time, then tick back up 1 bar at a time, until it is back at its pre-code level. This takes about 3-5 minutes. Once done, the IMA seems to work normally once again. Is this normal? Is this routine IMA battery diagnostics?
