I bought all mine for $4.50/quart, although I've since realized that Wal-Mart sells 5-quart jugs of Mobil 1 for $20, which works out to $4/quart. Of cuorse, you can't get 0W-20 in a 5-quart jug since it's discontinued, but when I had my S2000 for example I would just buy the 5-quart jug of 5W-30. It was real handy since the S2000 uses 5 quarts anyway, so I just buy one jug and pour the whole thing in.

Hi All:

Kinematic Viscosity

Mobil1 SAE 0W-20

cSt @ 100 degrees C = 8.7

Mobil1 SAE 5W-20
cSt @ 40 degrees C = 48.3
cSt @ 100 degrees C = 8.8

For my last two changes, I have used Mobil 1 Extended Performance 15,000 mile 5W-30 oil. First change, I put about 9200 miles on it between changes. Latest change was this past weekend.

From the Mobil Oil website:

Quote:
Mobil 1 Extended Performance motor oil is designed for today's longer service intervals. Mobil 1 Extended Performance products contain 50 percent more SuperSyn, 37 percent more cleaning agents, and 36 percent more anti-wear additives than Mobil 1. Mobil 1 Extended Performance with the Advanced SuperSyn System helps keep engines running like new and helps extend engine life by reducing wear and oil breakdown.
Mobil1 Ext Perf 5W-30
cSt @ 40 degrees C = 57.3
cSt @ 100 degrees C = 10.25

Viscosity Index = 169

Although it is slightly "off-grade" it has more "good stuff" in it than the standard Mobil 1, so I trust it completely. It's a little bit thicker than 0W-20, but the heat here in Phoenix keeps it plenty thinned out !!

So, what I'm hearing is that 5W20 seems to be the way to go until Mobil starts making 0W20 again. I'm in Los Angeles so cold weather isn't a factor.

Since Mobil discontinued 0W20 I doubt they'll start making it again. But according to "xcel", Pennzoil still makes that type.

Nice thread! I was wondering if 5w20 was ok to put in my HCH, I live in a warm climate and was thinking about it since it is a lot easier to get and is cheaper than the $7.00/qt my dealer wants for Honda branded 0w20. I also figured it would reduce engine wear at a slight cost of mpg when the engine is warming up. That tradeoff works for me. :-)

Thanks guys. :-)

Any advice on when to do the first oil change on my nice new HCH 5spd?

On my older cars I used to change break in oil at about 700-1k, but I hear that it is better to wait with the HCH engine till about 2k. Any truth to that?

Thanks again.

I was advised to refrain from performing the first oil change until around 7500 miles. Apparently the vehicle is delivered with some sort of breakin oil. I waited until 7500 and changed it with Mobil 1 0w20, and have been using it ever since. (currently showing 67,000 miles) The car runs great and have been getting around 48 mpg. Since Mobil doesn't make 0w20 any more I'm reluctant to use anything else. I've contacted Pennzoil about their so-called "hybrid" oil, but nothing back yet. I really don't want to break down and buy the overpriced Honda oil.

Has anyone used or found Pennzoil Platinum 0w20?

Howard
