I know that for most of us this is old news but for those who don't have an interest in hybrid cars, now they can at least know one of the downfalls of the Prius (and give us Honda owners something to gloat about

why is it that everytime I read a mainstream press article on hybrids, it gets the facts all wrong. Since when did the Prius beat the Insight as the first mass produced hybrid car?

Is there a definition of mass production I'm missing?

And I don't know how much we can gloat, we all did, afterall, take our Civics in for a "software" upgrade.

The prius was released in japan before the insight came out.

For all you anti-hybrid folks - how many people have been killed by a defective Prius? Now tell me how many have been killed by a defective Ford Explorer?

First Production hybrid

The Prius was the world's first production hybrid when introduced in Japan in 1997. Honda quickly developed the Insight and made it the first hybrid sold in the US.

A 1973 Oldsmobile was modified to use hybrid technology that was so much like the HSD, it's inventor was given a Prius later on. It was funded by the US government, but never followed up. The Oldsmobile had to be plugged in overnight due to the battery technology at the time.
