Hypermiling is just driving in such a way that you get really high fuel efficiency. There are different opinions about exactly how fuel efficient someone needs to be to be called a hypermiler, but I think people on this forum sometimes use the phrase to mean 'getting good gas mileage' generally- better than you would get from just buying a hybrid and driving it around like any other car, that is.

It's a type of driving style, based on a lot of tricks, techniques, and some easy and some not so easy steps you can take, like simply driving without AC vs. making complicated modifications to the car. You can be a hypermiler and put in tons of effort, but some people can manage it with a lot less, especially in warm places like Arizona.

I think "hypermiling" is getting a MPG rating better than the Mfg Suggested Retail rating. For the Honda it is 49/51 so if you travel 100% highway and get 52 mpg then you, my friend, are a hypermiler. In the database I think you have to Hypermile for 3,000 miles or several tanks or something. As long as you get more than the non-Hybrid the vehicle replaced you should be happy though. I'm thrilled to death (the previous car was lucky to maintain 20 mpg).

.

--> Averaged 685 miles/week and 49.0 mpg in first year (35.7k miles from Aug 7, 2006 to Aug 7, 2007)
