This USA Today article is the final stake in my heart about the demise of the Manual Tranny HCH. It's the first place I have seen that definitely states in as many words "there will be no manual transmission" and it says it twice.

Let's have a moment of silence for the 2003-2005 manual tranny............................................ .................................................. .................................................. ......................................

No MT and no rear disk brakes is a real hard one for me to swallow. If the 05 had a hybrid A/C compressor I would be calling my dealer in the am.

Wayne,

I have been watching for info about the '06 closely, but after driving my first car 17 years I don't think I could trade after just 1 year . Mainly I know a lot of folks around my office that constantly quiz me about the HCH. Working with a bunch of Electrical Engineers I think there are many reasons besides good gas mileage that they want to talk about hybrids. I think more than a couple are seriously looking at a hybrid for their next car and I help whenever I can.

Billy

Hi Billyt1963:

___Thanks for the inside info … If one of your buds does get an 06 HCH in October/November (I do not know why he/she would given the tax credit on Jan. 1), please give us a first hand review because I am interested in it myself

Yes:

"Keyless Entry System
Keyless entry is standard equipment on Civic LX and above models. The wave key design has an integrated transmitter in the handle with lock, unlock, trunk open and panic buttons. Civic EX, Si and Hybrid models also have a remote trunk release button located on keyless entry transmitter to allow easy access into the trunk."

The more I look at it, the more the '06 is starting to grow on me. Saturn look and all. I won't be buying one soon though.

I'm curious about this too and will be interested once the first batch of '06s have about 5k miles on them to see what happens

The one thing I am constantly pleased with is the completely random MPG rankings here at GH in both the CVT and MT bases for the HCH. If you look, you'll notice '03s, '04s, and '05s all mixed and jumbled together. On the one hand you may think it signifies no advancement whatsoever of the model over the years, but I take great hope in realizing the fact that the rankings (with a few factors like climate aside) are almsot entirely dependent on how the car is driven and not when it was made. It means everyone here has the shot, whether they take it or not, to put up the same numbers Lakedude, Hot_Georgia, rjbarlow, and Kenny do. That's held true for '03s-'05s, and I expect it will for the '06s. It's all in how it's handled.

They don't have the updated figures for the 2006 but it will give you some information. And I assume they will update it once an official determination is made.

Regarding the poor mileage issue, the review actually said the car averaged mid-40s on the highway -- it was just mixed driving that brought it down, so the car won't handle city driving as well as the Prius, nor even as well as the 2005 HCH I guess. Because I happen to drive on highways alot more than regular roads, I'm still holding out hope.
