Default Warranty Negotiation

Greetings,

I've found that various Honda dealers have widely different prices for the Honda Care warranty (6 year/no deductable). One offers it for $1,695 another offers it for $1,200 some people have claimed to get it for $900.

Everywhere I talk they state that if I can get it in writing they will compete but then not a single place will put it in writing, they want to "negotiate" if they can but in reality they won't negotiate, they just say something about it being the standard price everywhere and if I can prove it they'll adjust their price... catch-22.

What is a good way to negotiate a better price on the Honda Care program? How can I get it in writing? Must I purchase it at the time of purchase or can I shop around after the fact?

Thanks,
Shawn

Shawn

Go to hondawarrantyinfo.com. This is a site run by Bernardi Honda in Massachussetts. They are among the best prices out there. Go through the process to get a quote - it will display the quote instantly on your screen. Print it out. I think that might count as being "in writing"

You can wait until after the purchase of your new car to get the warranty. You have until the car has 6000 miles on it to purchase a Honda Care warranty.

I'm considering this too.

Is this "Honda Care Warranty" exactaly the same as the 3-year bumper to bumper we all ready get, just longer?

Also is it the exact same Honda Care contract regardless of where you buy it, or do we have to read all the fine print and compare carefully.

Also the 6-year is really a 3-year since it is already covered for 3 years.
Right?

Good question. All the Honda dealers I spoke with say it has to be "exactly" the same thing or its not comparible. So if they are all *purposely* slightly different than there's no point in even trying.

kind of like I foud a dealer yesterday selling the civic hybrid for an MSRP of $24,995 but they don't charge any additional market adjustment fees. Call it what you want, MSRP is technically $23,900 according to Honda.com and by increasing the MSRP by $1005 you are still charging a market adjustment.

A fart by any other name still stinks.

Thanks,
Shawn

I am considering this as well. The warrantys are not the same. For instance, the battery ( not the IMA one, the conventional one) is not part of the extended warranty. In fact, the IMA battery isnt pat of the extended warranty as well ( covered for 8 years or more anyway). Otherwise, the Honda Care Warranty is the same from all resellers with one exception; not all of them refund an unused warranty when the warranty is up; in general the internet resellers do not, the higher priced locals do.

Thats what I have taken waway from all of this so far.

I just called a couple local dealers to price the longest Honda Care Warranty - 8 year 120,000 mi, zero deductable.

One said $2000, the other $1300.

Bernardi is $979, which sounds too good to be true.

I wonder if it really is an authentic Honda Care contract.

Here's the quote I got from Eric's link www. hondawarrantyinfo.com. (Bernardi Honda in Massachussetts) for my 2006 Honda Civic hybrid with 4200 miles put into service Jan 2006:

5 years/60,000 miles warranty: ($100 deductible = Not Available) OR ($0 deductible = $379.00)
5 years/80,000 miles warranty: ($100 deductible = $484.00) OR ($0 deductible = $584.00)
5 years/100,000 miles warranty: ($100 deductible = $569.00) OR ($0 deductible = $669.00)
6 years/80,000 miles warranty: ($100 deductible = $504.00) OR ($0 deductible = $604.00)
6 years/100,000 miles warranty: ($100 deductible = $629.00) OR ($0 deductible = $729.00)
6 years/120,000 miles warranty: ($100 deductible = $729.00) OR ($0 deductible = $829.00)
7 years/80,000 miles warranty: ($100 deductible = $524.00) OR ($0 deductible = $624.00)
7 years/100,000 miles warranty: ($100 deductible = $699.00) OR ($0 deductible = $799.00)
7 years/120,000 miles warranty: ($100 deductible = $799.00) OR ($0 deductible = $899.00)
8 years/100,000 miles warranty: ($100 deductible = $779.00) OR ($0 deductible = $879.00)
8 years/120,000 miles warranty: ($100 deductible = $879.00) OR ($0 deductible = $979.00)

I just read the 5-page Honda Care contract.
It is NOT as good as the original 3-year 36,000 Factory Warranty.
Not even close.
There are a zillion things NOT covered.

Hmmm
Sounds like the things that ARE covered like CV joints Water pump are probably not the things that will crap out within 8 years since it is a Honda.

I think I'll keep my $979 and put it in the bank.
It's a gamble.

If you scroll down to the bottom of this page, there is a link to a thread I started about this (Bernardi extended warranty). Has some additional information that might be helpful. The IMA battery actually IS covered by the HondaCare EW but doesn't really matter since I'm in CA where it's 10 yrs/150k miles anyway.

My rationale was the cost ($975) for me came to the same as one good-size repair bill, which I thought the odds of happening within 8 years was pretty good. So what I'm really paying for, is the peace of mind of knowing any major cost is controlled up front.

I never buy EWs on electronics or appliances, but always on cars. Every EW we have bought on past cars has paid for itself, many times.

I can only speak for my experience owning several Hondas - I've never had an extended warranty and it never would have paid off for me if I had. All the technology of the HCH may change the equation so that is a factor as well.
