Default 2005 Insight doesn't qualify . . .

to get the DMV sticker to drive solo in the carpool lanes in California.

http://www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/carpool/carpool.htm

Scroll down and see the note at the bottom about the Honda Insight not qualifying because it is not AT-PZEV.

How can this be?
The Insight gets better MPG than the 3 hybrids that ARE allowed to get the sticker.
Also the 2000 through 2004 Insight are not AT-PZEV either but they can get the sticker. ?????????????????

Hi Kenny:

___That is interesting. The CVT based Insight is SULEV qualified just as the Prius I? With the disclaimer, I wonder if they are stopping the 00 - 04 Insight’ers as well as 00 - 03 Prius I drivers from HOV lane usage?

___Good Luck

Likely because you can't buy them new anymore and since it won't encourage hybrid sales, there's no reason to clog up the HOV's with extra hybrids?

What can you not buy new anymore? Insights? Honda sold 68 new Insights in July 2005 - Do you mean because new 2006 Insights are not yet available? There will be 2006 model year Insights too.....
Got ya Jason - the 2004s. Thanks for the clearup Eric.........

I think he meant you can't buy 2000 - 2004 models new any more.

The cars allowed are
  • Prius – 2001-2005<<
  • Civic 2003-2005 both manual transmission and CVT<<
  • Insight 2000-2004<<
The 2005 Insights aren't eligible due to not meeting the AT-PZEV emission standard. Pre-2005 cars had a lower standard.

While some of the remaining hybrids may meet the emissions requirement, none meet the requirement of an EPA highway fuel economy rating of 45 mpg or more.

You can check the official approved list to be sure.

Originally I thought the 2005 manual CVT's were not AT-PZEV.
I was wrong and have corrected the post so as not to confse others.
