Question Aftermarket Navigation Systems

Hi all,
I'm looking at gettting an in-dash nav system (currently considering the Pioneer AVIC-N2, which has the monitor that motors out of the slot) for my new Insight. Has anyone put in an aftermarket nav system in their hybrid yet? Are there any particular concerns with installing one in my new Baby?? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I'd be interested in hearing about a nav system for the Insight.

How would the flip up screen work, seems like the dash configuration would interfere?

My wife's Acura has a nav system, would love it in my car.

Regards,

Hi Gatornail:

___I cannot give you any input in regards to the Pioneer system but having used the Honda/Acura NAVI (easily the best in the OEM business); there are shortfalls vs. a PDA based - GPS NAVI solution like Mapopolis on a Windows based PDA w/ a Sirf IIe/LP chipset or newer GPS Receiver. I have used Mapopolis with various PDA’s and GPS receivers in the Insight, Ranger, and MDX with excellent results vs. the sometimes featureless/feature-full Honda NAVI in the PZEV Accord.

___For a somewhat detailed list of HW and installation suggestions, the following link might be of interest?

Pocket PC GPS

___Scroll down a bit for my own setup as well as the installed – attached pic as it sits in the MDX today.

___Good Luck

Wayne,
My husband has a Garmin iQue PDA with nav, but I've always hated the thing. I thought that I just wasn't a "nav" girl until he got his Prius with the nav built in and I fell in love with it.

The main drawback with the PDA is the small screen (I found that I was having to take too much attention from my driving to follow it.) That's why I'm looking at the Pioneer, since it has a screen that is about 6.5 inches, large enough to follow the directions with just a glance.

I'm just concerned that there might be a problem installing it into a hybrid car, since I would think that a system like that might use more power and/or produce more heat than the stock cd player.

BTW, why did your Insight get retired?

There should be no problems with using more power or generating more heat, there's nothing particularly special about hybrid body electronics. My friend and I just installed a fold-out screen with a computer for navigation and audio in his Prius, as well as a couple of big amps and a subwoofer. No problems at all, and considering how 'non-standard' the Prius is, there should be even less of a problem installing something into a Honda.

Has anyone here tried out the Tom Tom go 300 or 700?
It looks interesting and for it's screen size the interface is pretty quick and useful.
Circuit City has been carying them for a little while now.

I am waiting for the new Tom Tom for the Treo 650 phone/PDA.
It looks quite cool but not available yet that I know of.
