In response to the following site:
http://www.theaircar.com/

I don't quite understand. The site states that it fills up with a certain fuel, but then again it's an "air" car that charges up? Explain this to me...

This vehicle is another version of an old idea. Run a vehicle using compressed air. It uses a number of ingenious techniques to improve the efficiency of the air motor, none of which are particularly new.

This car has an onboard electric motor-generator and air compressor/motor. It is charged up by cnnecting to an electrical source, so of course its energy ultimately comes from whatever means generates the grid electricity.

Some details that have been left out:

All systems that compress air and then expand it for use have considerable energy losses in both the compression and expansion cycles.

I don't know of any successful design of an engine with an articulating connecting rod. The idea sounds good, but it hasn't been made to work. All of the web sites that describe such a device seem to have a request for funds so the idea can be successfully developed. They may have a model, but not a running engine.

The articulated connecting rod is based on a 4-bar linkage. These have been around in useful applications since the steam engine was first invented.

Present air storage technology won't enable a vehicle to hold enough energy for a useful range and power.

Would I be right in saying, then, that since overall energy losses are so great, the only real advantage of compressed air is that it takes up less space than a battery?

The energy density of comressed air is greater than that of batteries. But when you add the container you loose that advantage. And the conversion from potential to actual energy is much less efficient. You start out with high pressure that drops to zero as you use it. Bottom line: I doubt that compressed air storage is lighter than batteries for the same useable energy. And it certainly takes up more space.

The advantages of compressed air in industry are:
1. Air energy can be transmitted a long ways in useable form with low loss. A 1000 foot long air line is not uncommon. Compare that with the length of an electrical extension cord.
2. Air is non-flammable. Gasoline or electricity in the wrong place can cause a lot of injury and damage.
3. Air motors, although inefficient, are cheap and light weight.
4. In underground mining, the air line is also a source of breathing air. Try to think of any other power source whose exhaust can be used to sustain life.
